Financial literacy is a crucial aspect that enables individuals to plan their lives and prepare for the future. As part of the right to education and the right to self-development, financial literacy should also be introduced to people with disabilities from an early age. PT FWD Insurance Indonesia ("FWD Insurance"), a life insurance company in Indonesia focused on customers with digital technology support, in collaboration with Prestasi Junior Indonesia ("PJI"), presents Financial Inclusion and Education for Successful Thoughts and Actions ("FIESTA"), an interactive financial literacy programme to provide equal opportunities in accessing essential financial knowledge for students with disabilities.
The United Nations (UN) issued the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in 2008, which includes equality of opportunity. The Financial Services Authority (OJK) also pays special attention through the Guidelines for Access to Financial Services for Empowered Disabilities (SETARA) as an effort to continuously promote financial inclusion, especially for people with disabilities. They, as regulated in Law No. 8 of 2016 concerning Persons with Disabilities, have the right to equal treatment before the law, including in financial matters.
The FIESTA programme focuses on building confidence to set financial goals, understand priorities, and make wise financial decisions.
Rudy F. Manik, Chief Human Resources & Marketing Officer of FWD Insurance, stated, "Financial literacy is essential knowledge that needs to be instilled from an early age, including for students with disabilities. This knowledge can be a foundation for independent living and help realise their future aspirations. FWD Insurance is committed to promoting inclusive financial literacy, including for students with disabilities."
The FIESTA programme was held at SLB Negeri 2 Jakarta and was attended by more than 70 students with hearing and intellectual disabilities, supported by the teachers.
In the FIESTA programme, students are introduced to how to earn, save, and use money wisely. The program modules are designed with activities and attractive visuals to be easily understood by participants with different abilities.
As part of the company's social responsibility, financial literacy is also provided to junior high school students through the JA SparktheDream program, also in collaboration with PJI, which has entered its third year in 2025.
"FWD Insurance is committed to continuously promoting inclusive financial literacy and reaching a wider community as part of our efforts to realize our vision of changing people's perspectives on insurance." added Rudy.
